Advanced Communication for Paramedics

Welcome!

Welcome to Advanced Communication for Paramedics. My name is Lisa Hurring, and I'm your lecturer and course facilitator for this unit. Joining you on this course are students from both the Rockhampton campus, and out in the wilds of distance education - please take the time to say hello to your new teammates, as you are soon to be spending a good amount of time working and learning together through this unit.

This course is learner-centred and very collaborative in nature, meaning that in addition to learning from myself and your readings, you will also explore and generate your own learning by yourself and with your peers as you progress. As such this course may be very different in structure and 'feel' to university courses you have previously completed, but please don't worry if this all feels very strange - you certainly won't be alone in feeling new to this, and this is why gaining exactly these skills in collaboration, communication, and teamwork form much of the main learning outcomes of this course! I have provided information to support your confidence in participating actively and successfully in the teamwork exercises, so please take the time to read through the Tips for Teamwork page.

As the course is conducted wholly online for both distance and on-campus students, you will need to use some online communication tools such as videoconferencing and Skype, and web 2.0 tools such as forums and wikis that many of you may not have used before. These tools are all easy to use, and gaining skills in their utilisation will benefit you long beyond this course, both in your continuing higher education and out in the workplace. Again I have provided help pages with all the information you should need to confidently use these tools, and have recorded a series of help videos detailing the use and navigation of each of these that you may review as often as needed. Please find these on the Tips for Technologies page.

There are a few pages and aspects to this site but I have kept navigation as simple as possible, and visible to you from every page is the site links map in the sidebar to the right. If ever you do get lost, there will always be a Return to Home button at the bottom of each page. Please take the time to explore this course, and remember that should you have any problems or questions that I am contactable at any time through the details on my contact page.

I look forward to meeting and working with you all over the coming weeks. The skills that you will gain will benefit you enormously throughout your professional career, no matter where that takes you, so I really do hope that you enjoy and get as much as possible out of this course
