What is effective communication?

For this first week you will familiarise yourself with the course overall. Please take some time to explore this online course environment, and ensure that you locate and read through the following important sections:

Next please go over to the forums and introduce yourself in the Introductions forum, and take time to read through and respond to others' introductions. Get to know your fellow students!

Then have a think about the first discussion post you will make as part of your discussion portfolio. For this first week I'd like you to make some quick notes on what you believe to be the most important aspects of good communication. What makes for a successful exchange of information between people, and what elements are crucial for positive interaction? Just jot these down in dotpoint format, then go onto your first readings, week one of your course guide and pages 2-13 (up to the end of the 'feedback' discussion) of chapter one of Therapeutic Communication for Health Care, undertaking the exercises. Now look again at your initial notes on the basic principles of communication. Has your impression of communication changed at all? If so what has been added or altered? Share your thoughts in a discussion post, and ensure that you correctly reference any literature source using APA style.
