Clinical communication: Dying, death, and difficult conversations
- Read chapter eleven of your course guide.
- Read Tamparo chapter nine.
- Read Tamparo chapter ten.
Your discussion topic for this week is to consider that you are transporting a palliative care patient from their home to the hospital, and that they are unlikely to return home. The patient is of the same gender and only two years older than yourself, they do not require active management, and whilst they are fatigued they are fully alert. How would you interact with this patient during the half-hour journey? Would this be a confronting situation for you in which you might feel unsure of what to say or speak about, or would you feel comfortable spending time with this patient? How would the situation feel different if the patient were much older or much younger? Post your discussion in the forum for peer review and take time to read your peers - such situations involving expected and inevitable death are often difficult for even experienced paramedics. No references are necessary for this personal reflection piece.
